killen on goals trail

CHRIS KILLEN waited almost 28 months to score his first goal at Celtic Park. He hopes his crucial header against Hearts paves the way for a scoring spree in the coming weeks.

With Marc-Antoine Fortune and Georgios Samaras injured, Killen was handed a start in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Hearts and repaid Tony Mowbray’s faith by grabbing a vital equaliser as the Hoops moved to the top of the SPL table.

Having signed for Celtic in June 2007, that first goal at Celtic Park was a long time coming for the big Kiwi and Killen hopes he won’t have to wait as long for the next one.

“It was great to get a goal and it was a good day all round for us,” said the Celtic striker, as he promoted Wednesday’s Co-operative Insurance Cup clash with Falkirk.

“We got the win against Hearts and that took us top, which was the most important thing. Personally, it was also nice to get a goal at home.

“Hopefully, I can start the game again on Wednesday night. That’s why I’m here at Celtic – to play games. It would be nice to get a start against Falkirk.

“I worked with the manager at Hibs and he knows my strengths. That gives me the confidence to know that he’s behind me and wants me here.

“I want to play week in, week out. I want to score goals and keep playing games. If I do that, then it’s up to the manager whether he picks me or not.”

Celtic travel to the Westfield Stadium on Wednesday night for a testing Co-operative Insurance Cup tie and Killen hopes to renew his Antipodean strike-force with Aussie Scott McDonald.

He said: “It was good playing with Scott. We have an understanding on and off the park but it always takes time to really gel. We’ve not played together too much but hopefully we can get a run of starts.”
